Bright,crisp,generally clean,publisher's original sharp-cornered yellow cloth bds; front bd with bright,crisp,red ink printed 3 lined edge border with red ink printed title+author and a small 3 lined bordered square within original borders of the bottom,right-hand corner,with publisher's intertwined capital initials 'HC'.Less bright red ink lettering to spine/ backstrip which is very slightly dulled but still bright and clean; rear bd plain yellow cloth with some minimal marks, bright crisp,clean unfoxed front+rear eps - author inscrptn excepted.Top edges aged/ toned with some sporadic foxing/spotting, fore-edges brighter and cleaner but also sporadically foxed/spotted; contents bright,tight and clean with some intermittent,random foxing/spotting throughout various pages and page edges - but still appears unread - no intentional dog-ear reading creases to any pages' corners.UK,12mo HB,minus dw/dj,SIGNED,1st edn,7-162pp [paginated] includes a foreword by Lady Eleanor Smith,contents list/table,a prologue,19 b/w drawings by Clifford Hall interspersed throughout the text and the book,plus [unpaginated] half- title+title pages,dedicated epigram, illustrations list/table,poetry extract ('The Circus Clown'],and prologue separator page. An illustrated biography of 19 eminent clowns from first quarter of the 20thC, each with an original portrait sketch/ drawing by Clifford Hall.Clowns included are Joe Craston,Johnny Watson,Coco,Pimpo, Pinocchio,Thomson,Beasy,Sloan,Percy Huxter,Lulu,Busti,Camillo,Alby Austin, McGeachie,Darty,Rene Manetti,Burri Manetti,Boston and Toni Gerbola. Frank Foster was the long-serving ring-master for the Bertramn Mills Circus,his son Frank Foster Jnr,evetually taking over later.Both an uncommon item,even more so with a signature.
